Part of a New Tradition

We have the privilege—and the challenge—of living in an exceptional era. For the first time in history, the ancient wisdom of the East and the modern insights of the West are coming together in a dynamic exchange. This convergence is fostering new ways of understanding two profound aspects of human experience: the ongoing process of human development—our growth through time, shaped by culture, psychology, and relationships—and the transformative experience of awakening to our timeless/boundless nature.

Expressions such as Genpo Roshi’s Big Mind / Big Heart process and John Kesler’s Integral Polarity Practice are inspiring examples of how these two dimensions of life can complement and enrich each other.

This course has been created in the spirit of these emerging traditions.

Santiago talks about aspects of what participants may experience:

“Each session offered a new discovery, an unfolding of insights, a new level of clarity and the opening of new horizons. I feel that some of the experiences I had significantly expanded my view of myself and the kosmos. The boundaries have expanded, opening up for new ways of experiencing reality.

Mostly, I feel a liberation from judgments and constant comparisons; a lightness of being, spaciousness, a radiance that shines through all.”

What’s the course about?

During this four-week intensive online course, we will take a Developmental and Spiritual Journey as we ride on different aspects or “voices” of the self, following their growth through the stages. We will explore four fundamental aspects as they transform through the tiers, eventually taking us into an experience of our boundless/timeless nature.

Aspects we will explore:

The Thinking Mind

Our capacity for thought begins simply, with the concrete mind (Concrete tier) learning to name and categorize the world around us. Over time, this basic concrete understanding evolves into the abstract  mind (Subtle tier), enabling us to craft complex ideas and engage in abstract reasoning that becomes increasingly subtle as we approach the limits of rationality.

This transition invites a profound shift into the non-thinking mind (MetaAware tier), where we experience reality beyond the conceptual veils that obscure our inherent nature of awakened awareness. Once we reach this state, the thinking mind’s creativity is fully unleashed, enabling us to generate profoundly innovative thoughts and ideas that were previously inaccessible.

Purpose

Purpose starts as a primal force, rooted in our instinctual biological drives. It then takes shape through the expectations of our culture and traditions (Concrete tier), offering us a sense of belonging and direction. As we mature, purpose transforms into a personal quest—first for individuality, and later for an evolutionary calling that aligns with something larger than ourselves (Subtle tier).

Finally, we transcend the duality of “having a purpose” and “having none” (MetAware tier), discovering a deeper rhythm in life that requires no justification to simply be.

Boundaries

We enter life in a state of undifferentiated awareness, unbounded and whole. Gradually, we come to recognize physical boundaries and our place within social groups (Concrete tier), forming a basic sense of self. This deepens in the next tier, where we shape our unique identity and, eventually, an authentic self (Subtle tier).

With continued growth, these boundaries become more transparent, eventually revealing themselves as constructs of the mind rather than inherent features of reality. This realization draws us back to our boundless/timeless nature (MetAware tier), where the illusion of separation dissolves. In this space, we learn to play with these constructed boundaries, expressing an unbounded flow of creativity.

Faith

Faith begins as an intrinsic trust—an impulse that allows us to explore the world, take our first steps, and learn through trial and error. Over time, this trust expands to include our group and traditions (Concrete tier), grounding us in shared values and beliefs. As we grow, faith evolves to rest in reason and evidence, and eventually in the evolutionary impulse that propels us toward growth and transformation (Subtle tier).

In the next tier, we encounter the “groundless ground”—an ever-present reality that underlies all experience (MetAware tier). Here, faith blossoms into a profound letting go, where we learn to fully trust as we engage with the unfolding of each moment as it is.

Who’s the course for?

Someone interested in how spirituality and development can come together in an integrated way.

Anyone who wants to bring their cognitive understanding of development into an embodied, felt experience.

Someone who is new to or beginning to understand the STAGES model and wants to experience it directly from the start.

Coaches, therapists, healing practitioners, spiritual directors, leaders, and teachers who want to deepen their understanding of the relationship between development and spirituality, so that they can better support those they work with.

What might you leave with?

Through this course, you may

  • Learn through direct experience how the sense of self begins to form and develops through the stages, all the way to the realization of its boundless/timeless nature.
  • Discover the primordial wisdom and compassion that arise when the different aspects of our self are both transcended and included.
  • Learn how the “absolute” and “relative” truths harmoniously integrate.
  • Learn how to attune to the intelligence of the collective, discovering its rich and fertile ground for development and spiritual growth.
  • Practices to incorporate into daily life as an optimal space for developmental and spiritual growth.

The Methodology

We’ll engage in a unique and interactive form of collective meditation. Blending the timeless wisdom of the East (Zen) with the modern insights of the West (voice dialogue), this approach taps into the emergent wisdom of the group. Together, we’ll explore the journey of our inner voices as they grow through the stages, gently integrate shadow material, and open the door to our timeless and boundless essence.

The course also includes a workbook of practices designed to apply and cement any insights from the participants into their daily lives.

About Santiago

The course is led by Santiago Santai Jiménez, an ordained Zen monk, certified Big Mind/Big Heart process facilitator, and certified STAGES coach and debriefer.

Santiago weaves together what are traditionally seen as the gradual and sudden approaches to awakening. He combines the systematic development of the mind emphasized in certain ancient traditions with the immediate realization central to some forms of Zen. His encounter with developmental theory, particularly the STAGES model, ignited a deep passion for exploring the relationship between development and awakening. Santiago is dedicated to creating skillful and practical methods to support people in navigating and integrating these two profound dimensions of the human journey.
